FACIAL PROCEDURES

Fat Transfer/Injections

With aging, massive weight-loss and occasionally disease, the face may tend to lose volume and fullness resulting in hollowing of areas particularly around the eyes, below the cheekbones, and in the temporal areas.  Facial skin may start to sag down towards the mouth area creating prominent "nasolabial folds".  These changes may suggest a more aged-appearance.  Volume correction may be performed by taking fat from other areas (such as the abdomen, breast or buttocks areas) that is then injected into the hollow, facial areas in a process called "fat transfer" or "fat-grafting" to restore that more youthful shape.

BOTOX®

When you smile, laugh, frown, or look puzzled, you contract the muscles of your face. Over time, these contractions produce permanent furrows and deep wrinkles in the skin, especially around the eyes and mouth, between the eyebrows, and on the forehead. These lines can make you look older, sad, angry or tired. BOTOX® is a minimally invasive procedure that can leave you looking younger and refreshed. This safe and extremely dilute toxin will paralyze certain, targeted facial muscles to stop wrinkling of the overlying skin.  Persons with tension and migraine headaches may be greatly helped with BOTOX® injections.  Also, stopping the skin wrinkling in certain key areas such as the 'crow's feet', forehead and area between the eyes caused by recurrent facial animation, further prevents wrinkles from becoming deeper and more permanent with time.  BOTOX® may also be used to combat 'hyperhidrosis', or excessive sweating of the axillary (armpit) areas and/or the hands.

Injectable Fillers

Fillers are cosmetic injections used to smooth wrinkles or scars, fill furrows, sculpt lips, and shape facial features. Below is a list of filler injections that Dr. Schmelzer provides:

Restylane® / Perlane®
Approved by the FDA, Restylane® is designed to smooth wrinkles, sculpt lips and shape facial contours. Restylane® is a clear transparent gel composed of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that is found throughout your body. This acid is not of animal or human origin, which means that there is no risk of allergic reaction. The most common areas for a Restylane® treatment are the glabellar lines (between the eyebrows) and the nasolabial folds (from the root of the nose to the angle of your mouth). With its unique ability to bind with water, Restylane® remains in your skin for many months.

Radiesse™
Radiesse™ is a synthetic injectable filler that reduces wrinkles, creases and scars by augmenting the body's natural collagen supply. Composed of microspheres in a biocompatible gel, Radiesse™ is made from the same minerals found in our bones, so it carries little risk of allergic reaction. Radiesse™ can be used on many areas of the body, including the lips, nasolabial folds, peri-oral lines, depressed scars and oral commissures.

Treatments typically take 15 minutes and require only local anesthetic. Side effects such as swelling or bruising are minimal and should fade within a few days. Results are visible immediately after the injection and can last for months or years, although the procedure can be repeated as often as you wish.

Juvederm™
Touted as the "next generation" of facial fillers, Juvederm™ injectable gels gently smooth wrinkles and folds around the mouth and nose and restore a youthful volume to the face. Made with hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the body that works with collagen and elastin to provide volume and support to the skin, Juvederm® is especially effective on smile lines and "parentheses" (nasolabial folds) that run from the bottom of the nose to the sides of the mouth. Treatment takes only 15 minutes with immediate results and no downtime. Results typically last about 6-9 months.

Sculptra™
Sculptra™ is a new injectable product used to counteract the loss of fat beneath the skin (a condition called lipoatrophy). Sculptra™ is injected into the deep dermis layer of the skin to improve the appearance of sunken cheeks, hollow eyes, indentations and wrinkles. Its main component is an alpha hyrdoxy acid that has been used for 20 years in surgical products such as dissolvable sutures. Results can last up to two years.
