BREAST SURGERY

Breast Reduction

Large breasts can cause pain, improper posture, rashes, breathing problems, skeletal deformities, and low self-esteem. Breast reduction surgery is usually done to provide relief from these symptoms. Performed under general anesthesia, the two- to four-hour procedure removes fat and glandular tissue and tightens skin to produce smaller, lighter breasts that are in a healthier proportion to the rest of the body.

Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction restores a natural, symmetrical appearance to the chest, maintains body proportion, allows clothes & swimsuits to fit better, and most importantly, boosts self-confidence for women who have lost one or both breasts to mastectomy or who lack breasts due to a congenital or developmental abnormality. Reconstructive surgeons strive to create a new breast and nipple-areola complex that resembles the woman's natural breast as closely as possible in shape, size and position. This may be performed utilizing a myriad of techniques, both with and without implants; Dr. Schmelzer will work with you in deciding which is best for you. Breast reconstruction does not affect the recurrence of cancer, does not cause any other diseases, and does not affect chemotherapy or radiation treatment.

Gynecomastia
(Male Breast Reduction)

Although rarely discussed, enlarged male breasts (gynecomastia) affects nearly 40-60% of men, often with no known cause. This condition can be highly embarrassing as well as physically uncomfortable.

Young men who feel self-conscious about their appearance of enlarged breasts are helped with breast reduction surgery. The procedure removes fat and/or glandular tissue from the breasts and in some cases excess skin as well. The result is a flatter, firmer chest.

Breast Implant Removal

Some women who have had breast implant surgery may choose to have one or both implants removed at a later date for many reasons, including implant malfunction. Dr. Schmelzer will discuss the risk and benefits of implant removal with you during your consultation.
